Note: When the federal government instituted standards for county route signs, Nassau County did not have enough money to pay for the new signs necessary to comply. Therefore, all county route signs in Nassau were simply taken down at the time. Today, all county routes are unsigned, and there are no route numbers recognized by the county itself. However, a system of county route numbers is recognized by the New York State Department of Transportation and is referenced in documents from the state. These numbers are used on this web site. They are loosely based on the original county route numbers that were posted but only cover the most major roads in the county. There are numerous other more minor roads maintained by the Nassau County Department of Public Works that have no route number recognized by the state.
