Welcome to the City of Poughkeepsie! US 9 becomes an expressway at the city line. The first exit is for Academy Street and South Avenue. The right lane becomes an exit only lane, and the expressway narrows down to two lanes north of this exit.

There is an interchange with US 44/NY 55, which crosses the Hudson River just west of here on the Mid-Hudson Bridge and runs east as Church Street. This interchange is somewhat unusual in that the exit to go east is only on the northbound side and the exit to go west is only on the southbound side. A pair of turnarounds is provided to make this a full interchange. There is also an exit for Main Street.

There is an exit for Albany Street. Immediately thereafter, the expressway passes under the Walkway Over the Hudson, an old railroad bridge over the Hudson River that has been converted into a pedestrian bridge.
