NY 9A is routed along 12 Avenue, a large divided boulevard that is the westernmost north/south route in Manhattan. There are green signs informing motorists where they can turn left. This is the case at every other block because most streets in Manhattan are one-way. At West 42 Street, there is access to the Lincoln Tunnel (NY 495). Although the tunnel is designated a state route in both New York and New Jersey, signs on the New York side of the border mark it as an interstate. All trucks and buses using the tunnel must exit here.
