Broadway runs south through Morningside Heights as a four-lane divided highway. The campus of Columbia University is on the left, and the campus of Barnard College is on the right. There are no oversized street name signs in this area because the cross streets are interrupted by the campuses.

West 116 Street begins on the right at a traffic light with an oversized street name sign. The main entrance to the Columbia campus is to the left. The Barnard campus ends here, while the Columbia campus continues for another couple of blocks.

There is a traffic light with an oversized street name sign at Cathedral Parkway, which marks the end of Morningside Heights. Broadway continues straight ahead into the Upper West Side.

Broadway runs south through the Upper West Side. West End Avenue begins on the right just before West 107 Street. There are traffic lights with oversized street name signs at each block, including at West 96 Street, West 86 Street, West 79 Street, and West 72 Street.

The two-way section of Broadway ends at Columbus Circle, a traffic circle at the southwest corner of Central Park where there is access to 8 Avenue, Central Park South, and Central Park West.

South of Columbus Circle, Broadway is a southbound one-way street. There are oversized street signs at most intersections, including at West 57 Street. At West 47 Street, Broadway becomes a pedestrian mall as it passes through Times Square. All motor vehicles must turn right at West 47 Street.

Broadway resumes as a vehicular street at West 42 Street and continues southeast through Midtown to West 35 Street, where it becomes a pedestrian mall again at Herald Square where it crosses West 34 Street and 6 Avenue.

There is a traffic light with an oversized street name sign at East 23 Street. After crossing 5 Avenue, we are now on the East Side, and the cross streets are named accordingly.

There is a traffic light with an oversized street East 17 Street. Broadway is interrupted again, this time by Union Square. Motorists heading south should continue straight ahead onto Union Square West and follow it south for three blocks before turning left onto East 14 Street for one block to continue on Broadway.
