There is a bridge from Randalls Island to the Bronx. On the other side of the bridge, exit 47 is for the Major Deegan Expressway (I-87). It is a left exit. Bear right to stay on I-278, which is known as the Bruckner Expressway from this point on. Exit 48 is for East 138 Street.

The lanes from the RFK Bridge merge with lanes from the Major Deegan Expressway (I-87) to form the Bruckner Expressway. Exit 49 is for Sheridan Boulevard (NY 895) north.

Exit 54 is for the Whitestone Bridge (I-678) and the Throgs Neck Bridge (I-295). It also provides access to the Hutchinson Parkway and Zerega Avenue.

I-278 continue a short distance further before merging with I-95, which is the Cross Bronx Expressway to the south of here. For the next few exits to the north, I-95 is technically considered to be part of the Bruckner Expressway, but the name is not signed on this section, probably to avoid confusion.
