There is an entrance to the New York Thruway (I-87) south. The signage directs motorists following NY 17 to get on the Thruway and take it for one exit to NJ 17, although NY 17 actually continues straight ahead.

Orange Turnpike changes designation from NY 17 to NY 59. Turn right here to stay on NY 17.

The southernmost section of NY 17 is a two-lane divided road. It has no name and the route number is unsigned.

There is a turnaround to go back north, and then NY 17 turns into a ramp onto I-287, merging in at the New York-New Jersey state line, where NY 17 becomes NJ 17. The northbound side of this section of NY 17 can only be reached using the turnaround.
