Welcome to Washington, DC! The John Hanson Highway becomes New York Avenue upon entering the District of Columbia from Maryland. There is no welcome signage. Despite the name change, the first portion of New York Avenue is an expressway. There is an exit for Fort Lincoln Drive and South Dakota Avenue.

New York Avenue continues as an expressway for a short distance further. There are no additional exits.

The expressway portion ends at a traffic light at Bladensburg Road (Alternate US 1). Turn right to go north or left to go south.

Skipping a few miles, Constitution Avenue runs west as a six-lane undivided road. The National Mall is on the left.

At the end of Constitution Avenue, a ramp carries US 50 to I-66. The two routes are multiplexed over the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge across the Potomac River into Virginia.
