US 1 is a major route running from Key West in Florida to the Canadian border in Maine. Prior to the construction of I-95, it was the main route along the East Coast. It enters the District of Columbia from Virginia multiplexed with I-395 and immediately splits off to become 14th Street NW. It runs north, passing by the Jefferson Memorial and crossing the National Mall just east of the Washington Monument. On the north side of the National Mall, US 1 turns east onto Constitution Avenue (US 50). The two routes are multiplexed east along Constitution Avenue and then north along 6th Street. US 50 splits off onto New York Avenue, while US 1 continues north about half a mile further before turning east onto Rhode Island Avenue, which it follows northeast into Maryland.
The southbound side follows a different alignment from the northbound side through the downtown area of Washington. It leaves 6th Street NW at L Street NW, which it follows for two blocks to 9th Street NW. It then turns south onto 9th Street NW, which passes through a tunnel under the National Mall before emerging at an interchange with the Southwest Freeway (I-395).
US 1 has an alternate route that continues along Constitution Avenue to the east after US 1 and US 50 split off onto 6th Street NW. Constitution Avenue ends just east of the United States Capitol, and Alternate US 1 follows Maryland Avenue and Bladensburg Road into Maryland, where it rejoins US 1.
