East 79 Street runs east as a four-lane undivided road across the Upper East Side. There are traffic lights with oversized street name signs at Lexington Avenue, Park Avenue, and Madison Avenue.

East 79 Street ends here at 5 Avenue. The transverse road across Central Park to the West Side is straight ahead.

The transverse road is a super-2, a two-lane undivided limited-access highway, crossing Central Park. There are three overpasses, as well as a single traffic light in the middle of the park.

West 81 Street runs west as a two-lane undivided road. After one block, it becomes a one-way street in the other direction. All motorists must turn left onto Columbus Avenue.

Columbus Avenue is a southbound one-way street. After two blocks, West 79 Street begins on the right. There is an oversized street name sign to inform motorists that this is where they must turn to continue on 79 Street.

West 79 Street ends at the Henry Hudson Parkway (NY 9A). There is a full interchange, which includes a traffic circle at the very end of the street, where there are ramps to and from the parkway southbound. New Jersey is visible in the distance.
