I-280 begins at the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) in Kearny. There is a tollbooth. All motorists who do not have E-ZPass must turn in their tickets and pay a toll depending on how far they have travelled on the turnpike.

I-280 ends here, merging into I-80 east. There is an unnumbered exit just before the end leading to the ramp for exit 43 of I-80, which provides access to I-287 and US 46.
