The Zakim Bridge carries I-93 across the Charles River to Boston.

On the other side of the bridge, I-93 descends into a tunnel that is colloquially known as the Big Dig and carries the highway under the central area of Boston. There are several underground exits inside the tunnel. Exit 17A is for Government Center. Exit 17B is for the Callahan Tunnel (MA 1A) north. Exit 16B is for Purchase Street. Exit 16A is for the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) west and South Station.

I-93 emerges from the tunnel. From this point south, it is known as the Southeast Expressway. Exit 14 is for Massachusetts Avenue.
