MA 3A is a local alternative to the Pilgrims Highway (MA 3) passing through the towns along the water between Cape Cod and Boston. It begins at the Pilgrims Highway (MA 3) a short distance north of the Sagamore Bridge (US 6). For most of its length, it runs east of the highway, although there is a short section in Kingston where it crosses over and is just west of the highway. It extends north to Boston, where it ends at an interchange with the Southeast Expressway (I-93/US 1/MA 3). Gallivan Boulevard (MA 203) begins at the same interchange.

There is also a second section of MA 3 further north that serves as a local alternative to the US 3 expressway.
