National Pike runs west as a two-lane undivided road.

As National Pike begins to climb up Chestnut Ridge, there is a second westbound lane for slow vehicles. Overhead signs in red and yellow warn of a dangerous descent ahead for trucks.

At the summit, National Pike narrows down to two lanes. Turn left for Laurel Caverns. The speed limit for trucks drops to 10 MPH for the descent down the other side of the mountain.

National Pike widens to four lanes. There is a brake check area where all trucks must stop before the descent.

Coming into Uniontown, US 40 becomes an expressway. At the first exit, National Pike splits off the become a business route.

There is an exit for Morgantown Road, which provides access to US 119 south and the Mon-Fayette Expressway (PA 43) south. Northbound US 119 is multiplexed with US 40 straight ahead.
