NY 440 is a major highway on Staten Island. NJ 440 becomes NY 440 at the Outerbridge Crossing. The first section is the West Shore Expressway, which runs north along the western edge of Staten Island. At the Staten Island Expressway (I-278), the West Shore Expressway ends and NY 440 north is multiplexed with I-278 east. A few exits later, it splits off to become the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Expressway, which was formerly known as the Willowbrook Expressway. This section ends at the Bayonne Bridge, which connects Staten Island to New Jersey. NY 440 becomes NJ 440 on the other side.
