The McCarter Highway becomes a divided boulevard. There are traffic lights at Rector Street, Center Street, Raymond Boulevard, Market Street, Edison Place, and Lafayette Street.

Just before it ends, the McCarter Highway becomes an expressway again. There is an exit for I-78, which provides access to the Garden State Parkway (NJ 444), US 1/US 9 north, and the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95).
