Exit 56 is for West Peddie Street and Elizabeth Avenue. It is the only exit that can be accessed directly from the express lanes without using a crossover.

Exit 57 is for the McCarter Highway (NJ 21) north.

Exits 58A-B is for the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95), US 1/US 9, the McCarter Highway (NJ 21), and US 22. There is one final crossover to the local lanes providing access to these exits.

The free portion of I-78 ends here at the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95). There is a tollbooth. All motorists who do not have E-ZPass must stop and take a ticket indicating where they got onto the turnpike. After the toll, the highway splits. Bear left to remain on I-78, which continues straight ahead as the Newark Bay Extension of the turnpike. Bear right for the mainline of the turnpike.
