PA 581 is a short east/west route connecting I-81 to I-83 in the suburbs to the west of Harrisburg. It is numbered as if it were an interstate, even though it is a state route. PA 581 and the section of I-83 to the east of it are known as the Capital Beltway. While it has the same name, this highway is not to be confused with the Capital Beltway (I-495) that encircles Washington, DC. This one is so named because it loops around the state capital in Harrisburg.
