Nicolls Road is a major north/south route in central Suffolk. It was originally planned as a limited-access highway called the Nicolls Expressway, but these plans were not carried out. Nicolls Road as it was constructed is a road that falls in the gray area between a boulevard and an expressway. The entire road has four lanes, a large grass median, and a speed limit of 55 MPH. The southern portion of Nicolls Road is essentially an expressway. All interchanges except one between Sunrise Highway (NY 27) and the Long Island Expressway (I-495) are grade-separated. North of Portion Road (CR 16), there are many intersections with traffic lights. In 2000, the traffic light at Middle Country Road (NY 25) was replaced with a grade-separated interchange. A similar upgrade is planned for the interchange with Nesconset Highway (NY 347). Nicolls Road provides access to Stony Brook University near its northern end.
