NY 97 and NY 42 begin at US 6/US 209 in Port Jervis. The two routes are multiplexed for their first couple of miles. The first section is known as West Main Street. It begins as a two-lane divided road, but the median ends after a couple of blocks.

The road splits at a flasher. West Main Street splits off to the left to become a local street. Bear right onto Park Avenue to stay on NY 42/NY 97.
