CR 56 is an east/west route in Red Hook. It begins at Albany Post Road (US 9) and runs east as Old Post Road North. After one block, Old Post Road North splits off to the north, and CR 56 continues east as Spring Lake Road. After a little over a mile, Spring Lake Road splits off to the north to become CR 55. CR 56 continues east as Turkey Hill Road for several miles until Jackson Corners Road (CR 50), where it ends. The entire length is a two-lane undivided road.
