The Bayonne Bridge crosses the Kill Van Kull, connecting Staten Island to Bayonne, New Jersey. It is designated NY 440 on the New York side of the border and NJ 440 on the New Jersey side. NJ 440 continues north of the bridge through Bayonne, where it has an interchange with the Newark Bay Extension of the New Jersey Turnpike (I-78). It ends at Communipaw Avenue (Truck US 1/US 9) in Jersey City. NJ 440 is a four-lane divided highway with a combination of traffic lights and grade-separated interchanges.

The Outerbridge Crossing and its approach on the New Jersey side are also designated NJ 440. The two sections of NJ 440 are connected by NY 440 on Staten Island.
