US 522 is a major north/south route extending from Powhatan, Virginia, to Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. It passes through Maryland at the state's narrowest point at Hancock, where it is only two miles from West Virginia to Pennsylvania. It enters Maryland from West Virginia on a bridge over the Potomac River. There is a single exit for Main Street (MD 144), and then the highway ends an interchange with I-70. US 522 follows I-70 across the state line into Pennsylvania. The official mileage for US 522 in Maryland, as shown above, does not include the portion that is multiplexed with I-70.
