MA 9 is a major east/west route across Massachusetts, passing through the middle of the state. It begins at US 7 in Pittsfield and runs east through the Berkshires to Northampton, where there is an interchange with I-91. It continues east to Worcester, where it has an interchange with I-290. Shortly thereafter, it widens to become a large divided highway for most of the remainder of its length.

MA 9 continues east to the Boston area. It enters Boston as Huntington Avenue. After crossing the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90), it splits into a pair of parallel one-way streets. Eastbound traffic follows Stuart Street, while westbound traffic follows Saint James Avenue. Both end at MA 28, albeit in slightly different places as MA 28 is itself routed along a pair of parallel one-way streets with northbound traffic following Columbus Avenue and southbound traffic following Clarendon Street.
