I-84 begins at the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90). There is a toll barrier at the beginning of the highway. All motorists who do not have Fast Lane or E-ZPass must hand in their tickets and pay a toll depending on how far they have travelled on I-90.

I-84 continues straight ahead into Connecticut. Just before the state line, there are a couple of Massachusetts-style signs for the first exit in Connecticut, exit 74, which is for CT 171.
