DE 72 is a semicircular route in the western half of New Castle County. North of Delaware City, DE 9 turns north from Wrangle Hill Road onto River Road. Wrangle Hill Road continues west as DE 72. After a short distance, there is a diverging diamond interchange with DE 1. Wrangle Hill Road then gradually curves to the north. At Pulaski Highway (US 40), it changes names to become Sunset Lake Road. It crosses the Delaware Turnpike (I-95), but there is no interchange. DE 72 passes through Newark, where it is known as South Chapel Street and then Library Avenue. Heading out of town, it changes names again to become Capitol Trail, curving to the east. It then turns north onto Possum Park Road, which Capitol Trail continues east as DE 2. After about a mile, DE 72 turns onto Paper Mill Road, which runs north for another couple of miles to Limestone Road (DE 7), where it ends.
