River Road begins at New Hartford Road (US 44) in Barkhamsted and runs north as a two-lane undivided road.

There is a stop sign at CT 318. Turn right onto Pleasant Valley Road to go east and to stay on CT 181. Turn left onto Ripley Hill Road to go west.

There is a small bridge over the Farmington River. East River Road (SSR 482) begins on the left immediately after the bridge.

The two routes split. Turn right onto Saville Dam Road for CT 318. Continue straight ahead onto Center Hill Road to stay on CT 181.
