US 220 is a north/south route extending from Rockingham, North Carolina, to South Waverly, Pennsylvania, along the border with New York. It enters West Virginia from Virginia north of Monterey. It runs north to Franklin, where it is multiplexed with US 33 west for a short distance before splitting off to the north. It follows Petersburg Pike and Franklin Pike north to Petersburg, where it is joined by WV 28 and WV 55 as it turns east onto Virginia Avenue. After a few miles, it curves back to the north toward Moorefield, where it has an interchange with Corridor H (US 48). WV 55 splits off to join US 48 along Corridor H at this point. US 220/WV 28 continues north as Purgitsville Pike, which ends at US 50. There, the two routes split. WV 28 follows US 50 east to Romney, while US 220 follows it west for a few miles before splitting off onto Cut Off Road. After a short distance, Cut Off Road ends at the northern terminus of WV 93. US 220 turns north onto New Creek Highway, which is designated WV 93 to the south of this point. After a few miles, New Creek Highway comes into Keyser, where it changes names to become South Mineral Street and the North Mineral Street. It leaves the city by crossing a bridge over the Potomac River to Maryland.
