VT 9 is the southernmost east/west route crossing Vermont. For most of its length, it is known as Molly Stark Trail in memory of the wife of General John Stark, who commanded the American troops at the Battle of Bennington in the American Revolution. NY 7 becomes VT 9 upon entering Vermont. It passes through Bennington before crossing the state. Eventually, it reaches Brattleboro, where it turns north onto US 5. After a short distance, it splits off onto Chesterfield Road, which runs east for a short distance to a bridge over the Connecticut River to New Hampshire. VT 9 becomes NH 9 at the state line.
