US 30 is a major east/west route crossing the country from Portland, Oregon, to Atlantic City, New Jersey. It enters Pennsylvania from the very top of the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia and runs diagonally to the southeast to US 22, which is an expressway in the area. The two routes are multiplexed for the remainder of the expressway section, which ends at I-376. They then follow I-376 through Pittsburgh.
On the other side of the city, US 30 splits off from I-376 onto Ardmore Boulevard, which is designated PA 8 to the north. It runs southeast to Irwin and then crosses the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76). It continues to Greensburg, where it becomes a semicircular expressway that bypasses the downtown area before continuing east as a surface road.
US 30 continues east, running north of and parallel to the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76). In Bedford, it crosses the turnpike several times. In Breezewood, there is an infamous interchange where I-70 ends at US 30 and then begins again after about a quarter of a mile, requiring motorists following I-70 to pass through traffic lights. US 30 continues east, passing through Chambersburg, where there is an interchange with I-81, and then Gettysburg, the site of the famous battle in the American Civil War where Abraham Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Address.
In the area of York, US 30 becomes a divided highway. It passes north of the downtown area and has an interchange with I-83. Shortly thereafter, it becomes an expressway. It crosses the Susquehanna River to Lancaster County, also known as Pennsylvania Dutch Country. The expressway passes north of Lancaster. Shortly east of the city, the expressway ends. US 30 continues east as a surface road to Parkesburg, where it becomes an expressway called the Coatesville-Downingtown Bypass. As its name suggests, the expressway passes north of Coatesville and Downingtown, while a business route passes through the towns.
Just east of Exton, there is an interchange with the US 202 expressway. There, the Coatesville-Downingtown Bypass ends and merges with the business route. US 30 continues east to Philadelphia, where it joins the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) before splitting off after one exit to follow the Vine Street Expressway (I-676). US 30 follows I-676 for its entire length in Pennsylvania, crossing the Ben Franklin Bridge to New Jersey. On the other side, the two routes split, and US 30 continue east to Atlantic City.
