I-83 is a major north/south highway in Maryland and Pennsylvania, extending from Baltimore to Harrisburg. For most of its length in Pennsylvania, it is known as the Susquehanna Expressway. It loops around York to the east, with a business loop through the downtown area of the city. Approaching Harrisburg, there is an interchange with the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76). Shortly thereafter, the Susquehanna Expressway ends. I-83 curves to the east and merges with the Capital Beltway, a highway than is designated PA 581 to the west. While it has the same name, this highway is not to be confused with the Capital Beltway (I-495) that encircles Washington, DC. This one is so named because it loops around the state capital in Harrisburg. I-83 follows the Capital Beltway east for a few miles to the northern terminus of I-283, where it turns back to the north. After a few more miles, it ends at I-81.
