Ruland Road is a short east/west route in Melville. It begins at Broad Hollow Road (NY 110) and runs northeast for a little over a mile to Pinelawn Road (CR 3). There, the county route ends, and it changes names to become Colonial Springs Road.

CR 5 was originally proposed to follow the entirety of its present alignment and then continue east along Colonial Springs Road to end at Little East Neck Road, which would have been CR 95. It was one of a number of routes known as "county system roads" that were legally designated as county routes but remained under the jurisdiction of the towns. In 2010, the Town of Huntington successfully sued Suffolk County and obtained a court order for the county to take over maintenance responsibility for all of the county system roads within the town. In 2022, the town and the county entered into a settlement in which they agreed to a series of maintenance swaps. As part of this, Ruland Road became a county route permanently, while Colonial Springs Road was returned to the town. Subsequently, CR 5 signage was erected on Ruland Road in 2024.
