US 4 is an east/west route from Upstate New York through Vermont to New Hampshire. While it is considered to be an east/west route overall, consistent with its even route number, the portion in New York is marked as a north/south route. It begins at Columbia Turnpike (US 9/US 20) in East Greenbush, just outside of Albany. It runs north through Troy before crossing the Hudson River to Waterford, where it joins NY 32. The two routes are multiplexed along the Hudson River for a while before splitting. Then, US 4 continues north to Hudson Falls, while NY 32 runs next to it, a couple of miles to the west, to Glens Falls. After Hudson Falls, US 4 runs northeast and then turns to the east to enter Vermont.
