US 20 is a major east/west route crossing the country from Newport, Oregon, to Boston, Massachusetts. It is the longest numbered route in the United States. US 20 enters New York from Pennsylvania just east of Erie and runs near the shore of Lake Erie to the Buffalo area. It passes south and east of Buffalo without ever entering the city itself.

Heading out of the Buffalo area, US 20 turns east and crosses the state, running south of and parallel to the New York Thruway (I-90). It passes along the northern tips of the Finger Lakes and avoids major cities such as Rochester, Syracuse, and Utica. When it reaches Albany, US 20 does actually enter the city. There, it joins US 9 and crosses the Dunn Memorial Bridge across the Hudson River. On the other side, the two routes are multiplexed for a few miles, and then US 9 splits off to continue south toward New York City. US 20 continues east to the state line, where it continues into Massachusetts.
