NY 8 is a north/south route extending from near the Pennsylvania border to Lake George. It begins at the Quickway (NY 17/Future I-86) in Deposit and runs north, multiplexed with NY 10 at first. After a little less than a mile, then two routes split. It runs north to the Utica area, where it becomes an expressway for a few miles. In New Hartford, there is an interchange with the North-South Arterial Highway (NY 5/NY 12). NY 8 leaves the expressway, which continues for another couple of miles as NY 840, and joins NY 5/NY 12 along the arterial. The three routes follow the arterial through Utica to the beginning of I-790. All four are multiplexed for one exit, after which I-790/NY 5 splits off onto the service roads of the New York Thruway (I-90). NY 8/NY 12 continues north as an expressway. After another few miles, the two routes split again, and NY 8 becomes a surface road again. It eventually curves to the east and runs through the Adirondack Mountains to Speculator, where it joins NY 30. The two routes are wrong-way multiplexed for a few miles and then splits. NY 8 continues east to Hague, where it ends at Lake Shore Drive (NY 9N) along Lake George.
