NY 5A is a short east/west route in the Utica area that serves as a local alternative to the North-South Arterial Highway (NY 5/NY 8/NY 12). It begins at Seneca Turnpike (NY 5) in New Hartford. The first section is a four-lane undivided road called Commercial Drive that runs from New Hartford to New York Mills. There, Commercial Drive splits off to become a local street, and NY 5A merges with Oriskany Boulevard (NY 69) at a grade-separated interchange. NY 69 ends at this interchange, and NY 5A takes over Oriskany Boulevard, which changes names to become Oriskany Street West. NY 5A ends at an interchange with the North-South Arterial Highway (I-790/NY 5/NY 8/NY 12) in Utica, where it becomes Oriskany Street East (NY 5S).
