The approach to the tunnel begins at West 30 Street in Manhattan. There is a traffic light at West 31 Street after which NY 495 becomes a limited-access highway.

NY 495 descends into the Lincoln Tunnel, which passes under the Hudson River to New Jersey. It emerges on the other side as NJ 495.
