NY 171 is a short east/west route running along Moyer Creek in Frankfort. It is the only state route in New York that does connect to any other state route, unless one counts the section of NY 878 in Nassau County. This situation arose because the eastern terminus of NY 171 is at the original alignment of NY 5S prior to the construction of the East-West Arterial Highway. When the arterial was built, NY 5S was decommissioned along East Main Street and West Main Street through Frankfort, leaving NY 171 as a floating segment.
