The Southern Parkway is a major east/west route for the south shore of Long Island. It begins at the Cross Island and Belt Parkways at the Queens-Nassau county line. It runs to the east through Nassau and western Suffolk. It then curves to the south, passes Sunrise Highway (NY 27) and Montauk Highway (NY 27A), and ends at Heckscher State Park. The section between Sunrise Highway (NY 27) and Heckscher State Park is also called the Heckscher Parkway. The Southern Parkway is commonly called the Southern State Parkway.
The exit numbers of the Southern Parkway begin at 13. These numbers are left over from an old exit numbering scheme for the Cross Island Parkway in which the Whitestone Bridge (I-678) was exit 1 and the Belt Parkway was exit 12. At the time, the exit numbers on the Southern Parkway were a continuation of the exit numbers on the Cross Island Parkway. Today, the Cross Island Parkway's exit numbers are a continuation of the Belt Parkway's exit numbers.
