Bay Street is the easternmost north/south route on Staten Island. It runs along the Narrows, the strait separating Staten Island and Brooklyn. It begins at School Road just north Fort Wadsworth, a base of the United States Coast Guard. There is access to the Verrazano Bridge (I-278) and the Staten Island Expressway (I-278) via School Road at the southern terminus. Bay Street has its northern terminus at the terminal of the Staten Island Ferry in St. George, where it curves to the west to become Richmond Terrace. Most of Bay Street is a two-lane undivided road, except for the northernmost section near the ferry terminal, where it widens to four lanes and has a divider.
