There was originally no direct connection between I-84 and the New York Thruway (I-87). Instead, there was a pairs of exits, exits 7N-S, for Union Avenue (NY 300). Motorists wishing to transfer to the Thruway needed to get off at exit 7S, travel a short distance along the local streets, pass through several traffic lights, and then get on the Thruway. Currently, exit 7A provides a direct connection to the Thruway from I-84.
