Smithfield Valley Road is a north/south route extending from Amenia to Pine Plains. It begins at US 44 and runs north to end at NY 82 just south of NY 199. It is one of the longest county routes in Dutchess County. The entire length is a two-lane undivided road.

Many years ago, Smithfield Valley Road was part of NY 82, which was multiplexed with US 44 between Millbrook and Amenia. The present-day alignment of NY 82 through this area was then designated NY 82A, a designation that is no longer used.
