NJ 495 is an short east/west expressway in northern New Jersey. It begins at the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) in Secaucus and runs east to the Lincoln Tunnel, which runs under the Hudson River to Manhattan. The portion of the tunnel on the New York side of the border is officially designated NY 495, although there are no NY 495 shields in Manhattan. Although NJ 495 is a state route, it is numbered as if it were an interstate because it was originally planned as one. It has the same number as the Long Island Expressway (I-495) because the two highways were supposed to be connected by a Mid-Manhattan Expressway that would have crossed Manhattan, connecting the Lincoln Tunnel to the Midtown Tunnel and providing a continuous I-495 from Secaucus to Riverhead.
