Bayway begins at Brunswick Avenue in Elizabeth near the ramps from I-278 and runs west as a two-lane undivided road. There are traffic lights at Maple Avenue, South Broad Street (CR 623), and Grier Avenue.

Beyond the circle, NJ 439 is known as South Elmora Avenue. There is a traffic light at Lidgerwood Avenue (CR 514). This is a short section of CR 514 that is not contiguous with the rest of the route.
