Black Horse Pike is a local road running parallel to and just south of the Atlantic City Expressway (NJ 446) across the state from Atlantic City to Camden. Over the course of its length, it goes through several different route numbers: US 40, US 322, and NJ 42. At the northern terminus of the Atlantic City Expressway (NJ 446), NJ 42 leaves Black Horse Pike to become the North-South Freeway. The portion of Black Horse Pike north of this point is designated NJ 168. It begins as a four-lane divided highway but quickly narrows down to become a two-lane undivided road, which it remains for the rest of its length. It runs north to Camden, where it changes names to become Mount Ephraim Avenue. NJ 168 ends at the intersection with Ferry Avenue (CR 603) and Cypress Lane (CR 603), where it changes designation to become CR 605.

There is no direct highway connection between the New Jersey Turnpike (NJ 700) and the Atlantic City Expressway (NJ 446). Motorists wishing to transfer between them are routed along NJ 168 south for about a mile to the North-South Freeway (NJ 42).
