I-295 is a north/south highway providing an alternative to the Maine Turnpike (I-95) between Portland and Augusta. While the turnpike follows an inland route that bypasses the downtown area of Portland, I-295 stays closer to the coast and passes through the center of the city. I-295 is a free highway, but since both termini are at the Maine Turnpike (I-95), there are tolls at either end to enter or leave the turnpike.
