US 1 is a major route running from Key West in Florida to the Canadian border in Maine. Prior to the construction of I-95, it was the main route along the East Coast. It enters Massachusetts from Rhode Island north of Providence. The first section is a surface road known as Washington Street. After some distance, it becomes Boston-Providence Highway, which has a mixture of grade-separated interchanges and traffic lights.

In Dedham, there is an interchange with I-95/MA 128. US 1 leaves Boston-Providence Highway and follows I-95/MA 128 to I-93. It is multiplexed with I-93 north to Boston, where it splits off and crosses the Mystic River via the Tobin Bridge. On the other side of the bridge, US 1 is the Northeast Expressway. This expressway has grade-separated interchanges but also businesses that are directly accessed from the highway.

The expressway ends in Danvers. US 1 follows Newburyport Turnpike north to Newburyport. There, it changes names to become Bridge Road and crosses a bridge over the Merrimack River to Salisbury. There, it changes names once more to become Lafayette Road and continues north to New Hampshire.
