MA 79 begins at Broadway (MA 138) near I-195 in Fall River as a short expressway called the Western Fall River Expressway that runs north along the Taunton River for a couple of miles to the Fall River Expressway (MA 24). It is multiplexed with MA 24 for a few exits and then splits off to run northeast to Lakeville, where it ends at Main Street (MA 105).

Construction is currently in progress to remove the southernmost portion of the Western Fall River Expressway and replace it with a surface boulevard that will be combined with Davol Street (US 6/MA 138) in Fall River.
