I-495 is a short highway that bypasses the section of I-95 through Wilmington. It begins at the interchange where I-295 has its southern terminus at I-95 and runs north, eventually passing right next to the Delaware River. It ends at the border with Pennsylvania, where it merges back into I-95. Signs instruct motorists travelling between Pennsylvania and Maryland to use I-495 instead of I-95 in order to reduce congestion in Wilmington.
