US 5 is a major north/south route in Connecticut, running parallel to I-91. State Street exists as a local street in New Haven from Water Street (US 1) to I-91. At its interchange with I-91, State Street gains the US 5 designation. It continues north through New Haven and Hamden. US 5 runs north along local streets to Meriden, where it merges with CT 15. The combined US 5/CT 15 is a large divided boulevard called the Berlin Turnpike. South of Hartford, US 5/CT 15 leaves the Berlin Turnpike and runs to the northeast across I-91 as a limited-access highway called the Wilbur Cross Highway. Just before the northern terminus of the Wilbur Cross Highway at I-84 in East Hartford, US 5 splits off. It runs north along local streets to the Connecticut-Massachusetts state line. US 5 continues north through Massachusetts and Vermont to the Canadian border.
