Bloomfield Avenue begins at US 46 in Montville and runs southeast a four-lane divided highway.

There is a bridge across the Passaic River to Fairfield. On the other side, it is necessary to turn left onto Oak Road to stay on NJ 159, although there is no signage to indicate so. Bloomfield Avenue continues straight ahead as CR 506.
